The 5 most beautiful swimming lakes in South Tyrol
&w=1920&q=75)
The fact that Bolzano is the hottest city in Italy often leaves people in disbelief. In the capital of the Dolomites, nestled between mountains and hills, the summer heat tends to linger stubbornly. But even in the rest of the region, with an average of 300 sunny days a year, it gets summery hot everywhere. Fortunately, South Tyrol boasts over 23 swimming lakes and countless mountain lakes, which become popular meeting spots in summer and offer a wonderful refreshment for young and old alike.

Montiggler Lakes, Eppan
Nestled in a dense, green forest between Girlan and Eppan lie the large and small Monticolo Lakes. Clear and usually pleasantly warm even in early summer, they are surrounded by nature and flat rocks that are perfect for sunbathing. These rocks are popular gathering places: long-time local seniors feel just as at home here as teenagers, mountain bikers, and hikers who enjoy the scenic trails around the lakes. Swinging ropes over the water, high rocks, and overhanging trees make perfect diving spots and ensure that a day at the lake is anything but boring. If you prefer a bit more comfort, the nearby lido with its waterslide and sun deck is a great option.

Völser Weiher, Sciliar
Swimming with a view of the Sciliar? That’s only possible at the Völser Weiher. Hikers and mountaineers often stop here to cool off after a tour. It’s not large, but all the more idyllic. With a maximum depth of 3.5 meters, it’s ideal for children and anyone who enjoys a more relaxed swim. Part of the lake is a designated biotope, making it one of the cleanest bodies of water in South Tyrol. Thanks to its location at about 1000 meters above sea level, the Völser Weiher never gets too warm and provides a refreshing cool-down even on the hottest summer days.
Lake Göller, Aldein
To swim in Lake Göller, you must first take a 10-minute walk through a fairy-tale forest – but it’s definitely worth it. Emerald green and nestled between light woods that offer pleasant shade on hot days, the lake is a popular hiking destination. Many flat sandbanks and rocks invite you to lay out your towel and dive into the cool water. Many locals gather here, and the hidden gem in the forest is becoming increasingly popular with tourists too. Those who dare to dive despite the green water won’t be disappointed – legend has it that an old Piaggio Ape lies on the lakebed.

Lake Wolfsgruben, Ritten
On Bolzano’s sunny plateau, just a 30-minute walk from Oberbozen, lies the tranquil Wolfsgruben Lake. The lake is easily accessible by foot or car. In the past, its waters powered mills and sawmills—today, it’s a pure swimming lake. It's known for its high water quality and the many species of fish that thrive here. Children love the lido with its cozy swimming deck and extensive ice cream menu. Parents appreciate the snack bar “Sea 23,” where you can satisfy your hunger after a long day of swimming with fresh fish and burgers.
Lake Kaltern
Of course, Lake Kaltern must not be missing from our ranking. Thanks to its shallow depth and gentle shores, it is one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Alps. Nearly all businesses around the lake have private beaches, but the public swimming areas with their large, shaded lawns also offer wonderful relaxation. Visitors also enjoy the sailboats, rowboats, and pedal boats available for rent, offering a great way to explore the lake. Stand-up paddling is also becoming increasingly popular at Lake Kaltern, making it a great spot for active vacationers too. The many restaurants, ice cream parlors, and bars around the lake make it easy to enjoy the perfect end to a long summer day.
Engel & Völkers Bolzano wishes you a wonderful summer with many refreshing days by the lake and in the sun!
