Historic Succession in Luxembourg

Grand Duke Henri Hands Over to His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume
On October 3, 2025, a historic moment unfolds in the history of Luxembourg: Grand Duke Henri abdicates after 25 years on the throne and passes the crown to his eldest son, His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume. This step symbolizes both continuity and renewal for the Grand Duchy.
The Path to Abdication
As early as June 2024, Grand Duke Henri announced his intention to gradually transfer constitutional powers to his son. On October 8, 2024, Grand Duke Guillaume was appointed Lieutenant-Representative, taking on important state duties and preparing for his future role.
The formal abdication announcement was made in the Christmas address of 2024, with the date set for October 3, 2025.
The Ceremony on October 3
The day begins with Grand Duke Henri signing the Act of Abdication at the Grand Ducal Palace. Grand Duke Guillaume then takes the oath on the Constitution and is officially proclaimed Grand Duke.
In the afternoon, he delivers a public address from the palace balcony, attended by Luxembourgish citizens and international guests.
Celebrations on October 4 and 5
October 4: Official receptions take place, including a state dinner attended by heads of state and members of European royal families. Cultural events and public festivities are held in the city center.
October 5: Open days at the Grand Ducal Palace, exhibitions on Luxembourg’s royal history, and parades featuring military and cultural groups take place.
Who Is His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume?
At 43 years old, Grand Duke Guillaume has a solid background in economics, international relations, and diplomacy. His previous responsibilities as Lieutenant-Representative have prepared him well for the challenges of being a modern head of state.
A Tradition of Voluntary Abdication
Grand Duke Henri’s decision follows a longstanding Luxembourgish tradition. His father, Grand Duke Jean, voluntarily abdicated in 2000 after 36 years on the throne. Such abdications ensure the continuity and stability of the monarchy.
