The Parish of Santo António was formed by the merger of three Lisbon parishes: S. José, Coração de Jesus and São Mamede. Named in honour of Lisbon’s patron saint, the parish seeks to preserve the past and create new stories in the capital; to include all people and businesses in community life; to enhance and preserve its iconic places; and also to be an example of innovation, attracting young people and entrepreneurs to this location in the very heart of Lisbon. The parish includes the renowned Avenida da Liberdade, inaugurated at the end of the 19th century. The “Passeio Público” was created in the style of the great European boulevards of the time. This distinguished part of the city features, on both sides, large stately mansions representing the area’s wealth and excellence. Until the end of the 20th century, the area mainly attracted major service companies; since the early 2000s, however, it has seen the arrival of major international brands and property redevelopment aimed at the luxury residential market.
