Viggiù is a municipality in the north-east of the Province of Varese, more precisely in the Valceresio, at the foot of Monte Orsa, with about 5,300 inhabitants. Its history begins in very ancient times: Roman-era finds bear witness to it. Viggiù has many treasures. Among them, the historic centre is worth mentioning, unique of its kind, characterised by typical courtyard houses, with entrances adorned by artistic stone portals, where the stonemasons’ workshops were located. The famous “Viggiù Stone” was one of the many stones quarried from the surrounding hills; it was used as a building and decorative material and in the past this made the area a place of great artistic importance. This feature led to Viggiù being known as the village of the “Picasass”, because in the past, walking through the streets, one would hear only the ringing of hammers striking stone. There are also numerous churches enriched by works by local artists. In the heart of the village, set in a charming green setting, stands Villa Borromeo, an elegant late-neoclassical building, an ideal destination for day trips.
