La city of Varese stands on the shores of the lake of the same name. It is called the Garden City thanks to the many splendid private and public gardens within the municipality. Varese lies in a distinctive position, at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, which has an astronomical character. Varese rests on seven hills: Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), Colle di Giubiano (407 m), Colle Campigli (453 m), Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m) and Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The municipal territory is therefore between 238 and 1,150 metres above sea level.
