Localisation : Schwanenwerder, Berlin
The Havel islands within Berlin’s city limits have always attracted special residents thanks to their prominently scenic location. From 1794, King Frederick William II had a summer palace built on Peacock Island, which at the beginning of the 19th century served Queen Louise as a residence. A hundred years later, Emperor Wilhelm II renamed the neighboring island—known until then as Sandwerder—to Schwanenwerder. A bridge to the mainland was built and the ring-shaped island road laid out. It gave its name to the most expensive street in the first German edition of Monopoly. Schwanenwerder quickly became a magnet for the economic elite of the German Empire, who built magnificent villas here. Even today, hardly any other place in Berlin offers so much peace, closeness to nature and seclusion—while at the same time being so close to the city center. Via the AVUS you can quickly reach the government district, BER Airport, and Berlin’s city center with its wide range of upscale restaurants, exclusive shops and charming cafés. Around the Nikolassee S-Bahn station and the Wannsee S-Bahn and long-distance rail station there are shops for everyday needs. A primary school and a secondary school (Gymnasium) are also in the immediate vicinity. The Wannsee Golf and Country Club, the region’s most elegant club, is only a few kilometers away. The neighboring sailing and rowing clubs have been regarded as meeting places of elegant Berlin since imperial times.
