Work-life balance: how flexible work-family balance succeeds at Engel & Völkers Commercial Berlin

Editorial: Hello Gerrit, thank you for taking the time for this interview. You are Team Lead for Acquisition in the Residential and Commercial Building Investment sector at Engel & Völkers Commercial in Berlin. How long have you been with the company?

Gerrit Hunsdick: Hello, my pleasure! I have been with Engel & Völkers for about 6.5 years now.

Editorial: Before joining Engel & Völkers Commercial, you were the founder of a start-up. How does the corporate culture differ in terms of family-friendliness?

Gerrit Hunsdick: In my start-up, there were few opportunities to accommodate family life and personal time, which was a real issue for my co-founder at the time. At Engel & Völkers, I experienced a family-friendly culture from the very beginning, which has become increasingly important to me over the years, especially now that I have two daughters.

Editorial: Your daughters are 4.5 and 2.5 years old. How do you manage to balance work and family?

Gerrit Hunsdick: It is definitely a challenge, but fortunately, I have a great team behind me. We work very well together, so I can delegate tasks at short notice when needed. Many of my younger colleagues also have children, which fosters mutual understanding.

Editorial: How flexible is Engel & Völkers when it comes to balancing work and family?

Gerrit Hunsdick: Very flexible. The option to work from home is a big advantage for many colleagues. And in an emergency, you can even bring your children to the office, which always creates a good atmosphere. What matters is communicating openly and coordinating concretely and promptly.
