Location: Cannobio, Piedmont
A few kilometers from the border with Switzerland lies the charming town of Cannobio. This ancient settlement of Roman origin, set between the lake and the mountains, has preserved its historic charm intact; a stroll through the streets of the medieval old town is a must, followed by an aperitif in one of the many bars along the lakeside promenade. The Cannobio Lido is the best known on Lake Maggiore, which in this area has received the prestigious Blue Flag award from the Foundation for Environmental Education. Another highlight of this beautiful beach is the presence of wind, making it an ideal place for sailing sports, a true paradise for kite-surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Just above Cannobio, from the characteristic villages of Gurro and Finero, numerous hiking trails set off into the Cannobina Valley, the northern access point to Val Grande National Park, the largest wilderness area in the Alps. The village can be reached via State Road 34, which runs from Gravellona Toce (VB) to the national border with nearby Switzerland, or by hydrofoil and ferry services linking the village with the other municipalities on the lake. From Cannobio it is also possible to take Provincial Road 75 through the Cannobina Valley, leading into the valley of the same name, from which you can reach Val Vigezzo, the famous Valley of the Painters that enchants visitors with its picturesque scenery.
