In 2025, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg will once again host the popular "Open Garden" event. Garden enthusiasts will have the chance to explore private and public gardens – including many gardens that are participating for the first time. The event offers a wonderful opportunity to be inspired and gather new ideas for your own garden.

A glimpse into green living rooms – diverse and personal

What makes the Open Garden event so special is the incredible variety of participating gardens – and the people behind them. From tiny city gardens to lovingly maintained private yards, and from spacious landscape gardens to collector’s paradises, over 200 gardens are opening their gates.

Each garden is unique: You'll find wildlife-friendly gardens buzzing with bees, shaded retreats, child-friendly spaces, as well as allotments, community gardens, and show gardens from professional horticulturists. This diversity reflects how gardening is practiced individually – according to the owners’ passions, creativity, and resources.

What’s particularly charming is the opportunity to chat directly with the garden owners. Many share personal stories, gardening tips, or inspiration for your own green space. Sometimes you might even leave with a cutting to plant at home, or enjoy a friendly conversation over coffee.

More than just one weekend

The "Open Garden" event is not limited to just one weekend. For those who cannot attend one of the events or simply want more garden inspiration, there are additional opportunities:

On August 2, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, the atmospheric "Long Night of Gardens" will take place, with over 30 gardens open in the evening.

Additionally, on the first Sundays of each month through October, around 20–30 gardens will open their gates, allowing garden lovers to immerse themselves in various green oases throughout the year.

Garden guide and further information

To help plan your visit, a printed garden guide is available, listing all participating gardens with descriptions, opening hours, and addresses. The guide can be found at markets, fairs, garden centers, or directly from garden owners.

To order by mail, send a self-addressed A5 envelope with €1.80 postage, plus €2 in stamps, to:
Aktion Offener Garten
Lindenweg 4
23730 Hermannshof, Germany

Here you can also find all garden descriptions, opening dates, and current information.

Conclusion

The Open Garden event is a true highlight for plant lovers, amateur gardeners, and anyone curious about the rich variety and creativity of northern Germany’s gardens. Whether you're looking for expert tips, a relaxed stroll, or just the joy of discovery – you're warmly invited to step through the garden gate and be inspired.
