There is no excuse not to enjoy skiing in Catalunya and the Catalan Pyrenees during this 2016/2017 season. There are many options to suit all tastes, from beginners to the most advanced levels.
The Baqueira ski resort already has more than 50 years of history. Last year, it extended its tracks until reaching 153 kilometres with 2,160 hectares. At present, it has the most number of lifts in the entire the Iberian Peninsula.
At La Molina in Fontcanaleta, many international competition events are held at the highest level, including the Alpine Ski World Cup.
Masella has been growing and is currently a reference for all skiing enthusiasts in Catalonia. Its 10 kilometres of skiing make this resort one of the busiest in the world.
Other important resorts in Catalunya and the Catalan Pyrenees are: Valter 2000, Vall de Núria, Boí Taüll Resort and its World Heritage Site, la estación de Espot Esquí, Port Ainé, la estación de Tavascán, Port Del Comte in the province of Lleida, and many others.
It should be noted that Catalan resorts offer different options for day passes, weekend packages, or even weekly passes, where you can enjoy a single season or more.
The 2016-2017 season
In this season, 2016-2017, we are having a wet autumn, but temperatures are above the average. This lowers the temperature on the ground and makes it easier to prevent the snow from melting.
Like previous years, there are doubts about the possible cyclone that blocks the Atlantic.
So what awaits us for the winter? Everything seems to indicate that temperatures are about half a degree below average. Stronger snowfalls than the previous years are expected, but located mostly on the mountains.
The first snow will arrive in December. The winds will be entering from high latitudes, and all this will generate low temperatures, which are ideal for skiing.
For next year, 2017, we expect a very similar beginning at the end of 2016, with a little more cold than in previous seasons. There will be significant snowfall at the highest levels.
We can also predict alternating warm periods, caused by different anticyclonic situations.
From the Generalitat de Catalunya, an effort is being made for this 2016-2017 season, to capture the attention of ski enthusiasts and also the "non-skiing public".
As a result, it is ensured that the 16 Catalan ski resorts become a very important engine for the development of the regions of the Catalan Pyrenees.
