What to do in Barcelona during the month of August

Barcelona is a city that's most visited by tourists during the summer months. Visitors take advantage of the holiday season to discover this charming city. However, as the population has somewhat decreased, there tends to be less traffic in the streets. For instance, the streets of Gran Vía are almost empty in August, so if you are thinking of visiting Barcelona in August, there are many activities to take part in.

During the hot summer months, you can head down to the beach or have a swim in the pool. There are 10 urban beaches in Barcelona that tourists can visit. The closest ones to the centre are Sant Sebastiá, Sant Miquel, la Barceloneta and Somorrostro. These beaches tends to get busier during August but there are also many pools such as Picornell, Lake Coll Creueta Lake and Ensanche to take a dip in and beat the heat.

For those who enjoy music, Barcelona does not disappoint in August. The music concerts will make the summer more bearable. Free music concerts in different genres can be enjoyed in parks and outdoor venues. Also during the summer at Montaña de Montjuïc, an outdoor music festival is held. This concert is called Piknic Elektronic with many famous DJs showing off their talents.

It is during August that some of the most popular festivals are held in Barcelona. August 15th initiates the Fiestas de Gràcia, a week that consists of concerts and theatrical acts such as the "matinada de grallers". When these festivals come to an end, Sants holidays begin. There is also the interesting Festes de Sant Roc, a major festival in Gótico district. The celebrations take place near the cathedral, with "correfocs" and the very popular chocolatadas, besides its Craft Fair Plaça Nova.

Evenings in Barcelona should be spent at the outdoor cinemas. In Sant Sebastiá beach as well as El Prat, Badalona and Mataró, you can watch movies under the stars. CCCB also offers its own Gàndules festival in Pati de les Dones del Raval.
In addition, you will always have the option of enjoying the Barcelona nights in a disco or bar close to the beach. These include: Club Catwalk, Carpe Diem, Opium Mar, Bar Eclipse, Shôko or the usual classics like Razzmatazz, la Sala Bikini, el Sutton Club, or La Terrazza.
