The most important universities in Madrid

The city of Madrid and its surrounding area hosts numerous university centres with great importance, both public and private. Some of them have been recognised among the most prestigious in Spain and in this category, some of the oldest universities in the country can be found here. In this article, we will outline some of the most important universities:

Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Founded in 1822, it is considered to be the oldest in the city and is recognised as one of the most prestigious in the Hispanic world. It has two large campuses in the capital, one in Moncloa and the another in Somosaguas. Many famous and historic Spanish figures from all walks of life have studied in these classrooms including Severo Ochoa, Antonio Machado, Santiago Ramon and Cajal, Camilo Jose Cela or King Juan Carlos I.

Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Autonomous University of Madrid)

Founded in 1968, this is one of the best known in the capital. It has a huge campus called Cantoblanco, located north of the city, in the district of Fuencarral-El Pardo. It has seven faculties and among its extensive course catalogue, students can choose prestigious careers in science and medical studies, physics, biology or nursing.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

This is a university known for its excellent international reputation. Noted for its wide range of languages ​​and the presence of a high percentage of foreign students as well as numerous scholars who travel to other countries as part of exchange programs and Erasmus.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Polytechnic University of Madrid)

It was founded in 1971 and has several schools scattered around the capital, but the most important is in the so-called Ciudad Universitaria (University City). Its programs are geared towards technical studies such as engineering, telecommunications or architecture.

Universidad de Alcalá de Henares

This educational centre takes over from the university founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499. After numerous historical vicissitudes, the University of Alcalá de Henares now offers extensive training, which includes dozens of official undergraduate and graduate courses.

Universidad Rey Juan Carlos

It was founded in 1996 in honour of the monarch. Today, it is the second most populous Comunidad de Madrid university (community of Madrid), with as many as 38,000 students.

Madrid also has numerous private colleges, such as Camilo José Cela, Alfonso X el Sabio, CEU San Pablo, Antonio de Nebrija or Universidad Europea (the European University of Madrid). The capital is also the headquarters of the UNED distance learning university, which is the largest in the country with over 240,000 registered students.
