How to maximise space in smaller homes

On many occasions, interior decorating ideas seem to be appropriate for larger sized homes where space is never a problem. However, homes with somewhat smaller rooms deserve more attention if possible because of the need to optimise the available space. In this article, we will reveal some easy to apply ideas so that even the smallest sized home becomes the most welcoming.

Neutral colours and natural light
Dark or excessively bright colors generate some environmental tension and close up the room (as they make the walls and ceiling appear closer to us). Light colours, on the other hand, transmit a certain feeling of serenity and vitality. They give the impression that the room in question is more spacious. To enhance the effect of this interior decoration idea, it would be best to experiment with natural light in the rooms. At the end of the day, few images provide a greater sense of freedom than an open window.

Vertical furniture, sliding doors and furniture folding solutions
Verticality must prevail over horizontality in any small-sized property. Instead of having wide drawers, for example, you could choose to reduce the size of each drawer but increase the number of them (vertically).

Another way to gain space is to dispense with conventional doors, that is, those that open outwards or inwards. The sliding doors fulfill the same function without needing more space to open them. What's more, both the tables and the beds can be foldable as you can take advantage of the space that is already taken by other furniture. Contrary to popular belief, the modern folding beds are no longer synonymous with discomfort.

Nordic minimalism style

It goes without saying that the interior decoration style we know as Nordic minimalism seems to fit perfectly with the smaller-sized houses. Reducing the number and size of furniture, having more natural light and painting the walls white (or any other neutral colour) are, as a whole, a good decorative idea for a compact home.

Mirrors and space, an unbeatable combination
It may seem like a simple trick but mirrors do not stop being effective. They are a widely used resource, for example, in restaurants, and they generate the feeling that a room is bigger than it actually is. Their use in living rooms also achieves the same effect.
