How to protect your home from damp in spring

Spring has come at last and with it, a little bit of good weather has also arrived. However, this is probably the most unstable season of the year, so to speak. One day we wake up to sunshine and another day there is heavy rain, which can cause humidity in the home.

In this article, we want to give you a series of tips that will undoubtedly be very useful for preventing damp. Pay attention and you can be sure that your house will look radiant for the summer.

What kind of humidity usually appears in the spring?

First of all, we want to explain to you about the most common types of humidity in the spring. There are mainly three types:

1. Rising damp: this type of damp shows up in homes located on the ground floor as they are more in direct contact with the ground.
2. Condensation: appears in those areas of the property where the temperature is below dew point, such as in bathrooms with poor ventilation.
3. Penetrating damp: this is the most complex type of damp because it appears on ceilings, floors and windows due to building defects and inadequate insulation.

Now that you know the most common types of damp in homes during the spring season, it's now time to give you eight simple tips to help you prevent humidity in your home during spring.

Air the house every day

During this time of the year, it might still be cold in your town and, therefore, it can be difficult for you to open the windows to air the rooms. However, airing the house is vital in order to avoid the formation of moisture and humidity. Just do this for 10 minutes a day to prevent the appearance of damp on the ceilings and walls.

Always use the extractor fan when cooking

You think that you are saving energy by not using your extractor fan when cooking as your ceramic hob or stove is near a window. However, this is a serious mistake since cooking fumes and steam can facilitate the formation of damp patches and the accumulation of fungi.

Clean damp patches before covering them

Damp stains can be removed from the paint in a much simpler way than you imagine. In fact, just a damp cloth and a little bleach will do the trick. If you do not clean the stains and just cover them with paint, the only thing you will end up with is a growing patch underneath and the problem will get worse over time.

Always use a dehumidifier

Obviously, the reason for dampness in your home during the spring season is excess humidity. If you notice a particular point in your home is damp, buy a dehumidifier in the affected place. The results will be instant.

Do not turn the heating on too high

Although it is spring, there will still be cold days when you want to put the heating on. If so, do it with caution. Do not set the thermostat to more than 20º Celsius since this will encourage humidity.

Hang your clothes outside

Many homes still have clothing lines outside for hanging clothes on. But if your home doesn't have these, you can hang them on the terrace or as close to a window as possible. This will ensure that all the washed clothes will dry up thoroughly and moisture does not accumulate in other rooms of your home.

Be careful with the plants

We all like to have plants in our homes. However, when they require too much watering, it is best to place them on the terrace. If you do not have a terrace or simply want to keep your plants inside, always choose varieties that require little watering.

Check your pipes periodically

If your plumbing installation and water drainage pipes are already dated, it is important that you remain alert and regularly conduct a thorough inspection in search of periodic leaks. Only then will you be able to prevent leaks and detect them in time. You should even consider replacing the old pipes.

If you follow the tips that we have given, you can be sure that humidity or damp will not affect your home during the spring months. As you will have realised, these are extremely simple tasks that will undoubtedly have a greater impact on you and your family's comfort. After all, it is about protecting your most precious asset and the place where you spend more time throughout your life at, i.e. your home.
