5 tips for a winter barbecue on your terrace

The garden furniture is covered in snow, the days have become shorter, the outdoor lighting lights up the plants and the glow from the fireplace provides for a cosy atmosphere. Invite your friends to an amicable winter barbecue on your terrace.

Hamburg - 5 tips for a winter barbecue on your terrace

1. The right grill

There is no one “right” grill per se. Some swear by charcoal, others prefer gas. But keep in mind that the weather has an impact on the winter barbecue. If you are using a gas grill, you will need to turn in up more than usual. And if you are using a charcoal grill, it is recommendable to use a lid to keep in the heat. Prepare beforehand. Clean the grill before the guests arrive so that you can start without delay.

2. The right barbecue fare

In cool weather, opt for light barbecue fare. Avoid food that takes long to grill, then you won’t need to be outside for too long. Try thinly sliced meat and plenty of vegetables. Fennel is perfect for low temperatures. Season with a little chili and parmesan and take your guests on a winter journey of tasteful surprises. Other suitable vegetables include pumpkin and zucchini.

3. The right clothing

Dress warmly when grilling and spending time on the terrace to protect yourself from the cold. Have additional clothing and blankets ready for your guests. This will allow them to keep you company on the terrace, because grilling on your own is not as much fun. Your house should be nice and warm. If you have an indoor fireplace, light it up with aromatic wood.

4. The right drinks

Use the cold to your advantage! You can cool the beer or white wine outside – ideally in snow. Serve an alcohol-free punch with winter fruit juices. You could, for example, heat up plum juice with a little cinnamon, cloves and aniseed. Season with sugar to compensate the acidity of the fruit. The punch will keep your hands warm when you are grilling on the terrace, while keeping your head clear.

5. The right atmosphere

Of course the winter barbecue should take place on your terrace. However, you will hardly ask your guests to sit on the terrace and eat in the cold. Use cosy lighting and candles to create an inviting atmosphere at the dinner table. The fire in the background will provide a natural musical backdrop. Make sure your guests stay comfortably warm.
