Torrevieja is, of course, known for its stunning beaches; however, another interesting product of this region, and one that is progressively gaining popularity, is the characteristic grape varieties of Monastrell and Moscatel. Alicante's viticulture has undergone a huge transformation in recent decades and now produces some excellent wines, particularly spicy reds from the Monastrell grape.
Alicante has three distinct wine sub-zones. The Vinalopó is the southernmost and driest region, producing mainly red wines from the Monastrell grape, from which is made the characteristic sweet red wine Fondillón made in the rancio style from overripe grapes. The Marina is the northernmost and most humid locality on the Mediterranean coast, and produces sweet white Moscatel wines. Between the two regions, El Comtat produces both dry red wines and sweet white wines.
Here are some wineries with extensive collections of wines from various localities and vineyards offering tastings and excursions. We recommend that you contact the wineries to book a visit to book a visit.
