The German School of Madrid is the most beautiful school in the world. At least that is the opinion of the jury of the awards given at the World Architecture Festival, one of the most important architectural events of the year, which honours the most innovative projects on the international scene.

At the 2016's there were up to eight 'Spanish' buildings nominated. Three won the award, among them the school designed by the Berlin-based architecture studio Gruntüch Ernst.

Construction of the school began at the beginning of 2013 on a plot of 34.700 m². It cost 56 millions, of which 10% was contributed by the families and the rest by the german government. It is one of the largest educational establishments in Spain and the largest civil construction of the Federal Republic of Germany abroad.

This is the sixth location of the institution in the capital since its foundation in 1896. The german-speaking community in Madrid needed larger premises. For this reason, the Deutsche Schule or German School of Madrid decided to move to a larger centre. It obtained a plot of land in the north of the city in the neighbourhood of Montecarmelo.

There, it built powerful facilities that house 1.500 students and a kindergarten for 300 children. The building, constructed by FCC is made up of several polygons within which are located the classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasium, concert hall with 700 seats and a library. It has underground garage and has one of the most most beautiful views of the capital: to the guadarrama mountain range as it is located on the northern limit of the city.

The school has educated numerous generations of children, whose german parents have had to come to Madrid for work reasons, and it has also opened its doors to spanish children who have wanted to study with the german educational system. According to the centre, at the moment the percentage of spanish children "surpasses that of German children".
