Salamanca district – Madrid

The Salamanca district is one of the most prominent areas of Madrid, both for its distinctive layout and for the residents who have traditionally lived along its emblematic streets.

Its construction dates back to the second half of the 19th century and corresponds to the urban expansion carried out during the reign of Isabella II. The figure after whom it is named was the Málaga-born José de Salamanca y Mayol, Marquis of Salamanca, who conceived a new area with carefully planned buildings intended to house Madrid’s aristocratic and bourgeois classes. Of 19th-century style, it is characterized by its distinctive regular grid layout with perpendicular streets. Its buildings are of particular interest due to their architectural quality.

The Salamanca district also stands out for its stately façades, which make Madrid one of the most European capitals in terms of both classical and avant-garde architecture. The Salamanca district is undoubtedly one of the most elegant and prestigious residential areas on the European continent. The main avenues structuring the district from west to east are: Serrano, Velázquez, Príncipe de Vergara, Conde de Peñalver, and Francisco Silvela. From north to south: María de Molina, Diego de León, Ortega y Gasset (formerly Lista), Goya, and O'Donnell. The Plaza del Marqués de Salamanca is a central element of the Castro Plan, and Alcalá Street also helps unify the district as a whole.

Traditionally, Salamanca was a residential area, particularly inhabited by the country’s political and economic elites. Over the past fifty years, this residential character has coexisted with other activities such as business, diplomatic affairs, and especially commerce, as it is one of the most important luxury fashion districts in the capital.
