Furthermore, Rio Marina is the mining centre of the Island. For ages its economy was mainly related to extraction and transport of iron. The life of this small village is mainly concentrated in the marina area between reddish hills because of the iron. Cavo is also part of this village and it is the closest section of coastline to the dryland. Even though the village is very small, the old town is very welcoming and there are nice beaches that are a mixture of sand and white gravel. Just as Rio marina and Portoferraio, Cavo is a harbour well connected to Piombino. Rio Marina is a 45-minute drive away from Marina di Campo, 25 minutes from Portoferraio and 20 minutes from Porto Azzurro and Capoliveri.
