Atelier apartment in Sacrofano
This house-atelier, located in the historic center of Sacrofano, is an extraordinary example of living space transformed into a total work of art. It was created starting in the 1980s by D. S., an eclectic artist, a sociologist of artistic craftsmanship, and a creator of works in ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, and copper enameling. The entire apartment has been restored and decorated by the artist, who personally painted the majolica in the various rooms, drawing inspiration from esotericism, astrology, and traditional symbolism. The focal point of the house is the studio, where there is a large ceramic floor depicting the Zodiac wheel, surrounded by images from the Rider-Waite tarot.
The central composition, inspired by a 1573 zodiacal depiction by Georg Brentel, is made using the third fire ceramic technique on handmade Vietri tiles. In addition to the twelve zodiac signs, the constellations of Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cepheus, and Cassiopeia are also represented. The craquelé effect of the glaze gives the ensemble the appearance of an ancient mosaic and accentuates the symbolic value of the work. The tarot cards, chosen for their strong allegorical content, evoke themes dear to the artist: creativity, the reconciliation of opposites, the sense of infinity, and the inner journey. The other rooms in the house follow the same symbolic language: the fireplace, inspired by French tapestries of the 14th and 15th centuries, recalls fire as a principle of transformation; the kitchen features scenes from the Theatrum Sanitatis; the bathroom hosts an image of purification and rebirth.
This house-atelier represents a rare example of dialogue between daily life, art, and symbolic knowledge, where the domestic space becomes a place of spiritual and creative research.
