Location: Gignese, Nocco
Gignese is a renowned resort town that lies halfway between Stresa and Mottarone, as well as on the Due Riviere road that connects Lake Maggiore with Lake Orta. In the mid-19th century it was the vacation destination of the most renowned Lombard painters, and numerous villas sprang up in this era that breathed new life into the village. Right here is the beautiful Alpinia Botanical Garden, a 40,000sqm park that is home to many botanical species from the alpine and subalpine belt from various parts of the world. From Gignese you will have the possibility to quickly reach Stresa and visit the beauties offered by the pearl of Lake Maggiore such as the gardens and the sumptuous palaces of the Borromean Islands, or spend days of sporting activities near Mottarone, a mountain of about 1,500m above sea level that in winter becomes a ski resort and in summer offers beautiful trekking walks but also adrenaline thrills with Alpyland, a roller coaster with two-seater wagons overlooking the Borromean Gulf. There are several restaurants in Gignese and on the top of Mottarone, where you can taste simple traditional local dishes, absolutely healthy cuisine and an expert eye on the choice of raw materials, always of the highest quality. Very characteristic is the hamlet of Vezzo, believed to be of Roman, if not Gallic, origin. The village had some notable families, with ecclesiastics, notaries and public officials: Visconti, Calandra, De Antonis. The most characteristic spot in the village is the small central square or Piazza Caduti where, at the foot of the pink granite steps leading up to the parish church, there is a centuries-old horse chestnut tree surrounded by a sarizzo ring, formerly a well vera. Vezzo is also home to the famous 9-hole Stresa Alpino Golf Club; founded in 1924, it is one of the oldest courses in Italy. The club is situated on a green natural terrace at 700 meters above sea level and is located in one of the most characteristic areas of Lake Maggiore among beautiful natural and centuries-old forests only 7 km from Stresa. Of interest are the offerings of its restaurant lit by large windows overlooking hole 9, with a terrace for outdoor dining surrounded by greenery.
