Luino is the most important centre on the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore from an industrial, commercial and tourist perspective. It appears as an elegant lakeside town, with an almost Mediterranean setting. Luino is marked by history and culture, with a leaning toward literature, having been the birthplace of many contemporary writers, poets and actors. Luino is famous for its wonderful lakeside promenade, punctuated by plane trees and the harmonious architecture of its small buildings. The new lakeside promenade has two playground areas, a walkway suspended over the lake and a beach, “le Serenelle”, recently certified for excellent bathing water quality. Another beach, not far from Luino, is in the hamlet of Colmegna, famous for its crystal-clear waters. The walk through the historic centre is lovely, with its uphill lanes, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, the loggias of inner courtyards, artisan workshops and shops. One of Luino’s main attractions is the Wednesday market. It is a cosmopolitan, picturesque, extremely colourful folkloric spectacle, renewed every week since 1541. For sports enthusiasts there is the Alto Verbano sailing association, among the oldest on Lake Maggiore, the possibility of renting a motorboat, and also the extensive service offered by Lake Maggiore Navigation, with which you can reach the Borromean Islands or nearby Switzerland. Not far from Luino, in the municipality of Maccagno, you will find the small ski resort of Forcora (Forcora Ski), while if you want a breathtaking view of the lake, go to Agra and follow the trail called “Giro del Sole”. Luino enjoys a strategic position thanks to its proximity to Switzerland and the rail connection with Milan and the Canton of Ticino.
