Porto Cervo

The “Vecchio Porto” and the names of the most famous yachts

Canal lined with white Italian-style houses featuring wrought iron balconies and terracotta roofs, luxury boats moored along the waterfront

A lot of people love Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo, but not everyone knows the story of one of the most beautiful paradises on earth, a destination for an elite tourism of unparalleled beauty. From Porto Cervo Marina to Porto Vecchio, from Prince Karim Aga Khan love at first sight in Costa Smeralda to his choice of creating a unique location with that particular and unique architecture: Porto Cervo is the story of a love, a love for a coast that that has remained untouched over the years, boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in the world; where one can be overwhelmed by its effortless splendour.

Porto Vecchio: a natural harbour turned into luxury icon

We have already talked about it when we mentioned the story of Porto Rafael and the 50 years of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club: the birth of Porto Cervo dates back to the sixties, exactly in 1962. A very young prince, who at the time was only 22, fell in love with this part of the coast and decided to invest money and time to discover a land to live. Karim Aga Khan IV was enchanted by the beauty of Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo; He bought 3,000 hectares of uncultivated land and, with the help of architect Luigi Vietti and other professionals, began building what we now all know as Porto Cervo, a precious gem in Sardinia.

PortoVecchio – in English Old Port - was so called because in the 1980s began the building of what is today Porto Cervo Marina, a more equipped and larger part of the resort useful to host the international tourism that already in that time brought an important flow of tourists. Porto Vecchio is still functioning, enchanting the first time visitor but even those who know it since a long time. Within walking distance from the Promenade du Port, it houses boats and sailboats and on summer is set up with stalls enriching the vintage atmosphere with lights and glamour. Both marinas are the Sardinia’s holiday destination of the most powerful men in the world and where the most famous luxury yachts are docked and can be admired from late spring until late summer and, sometimes, even autumn.
