The etymology of the toponym "Barcarena" is controversial, with several authors suggesting that it might be a corruption of the toponym "Alcanena." Barcarena is a place whose occupation dates back to the Late Neolithic, with constructions from the Chalcolithic period. It is a reference for a known settlement of populations in the area, originating on the high western slope overlooking the valley, more than 5,500 years ago, indicating significant development based on an agro-pastoral economy. Barcarena is a settlement with centuries of history, located in the valley of the Barcarena stream. The settlement extends along the east and west banks of the stream of the same name and is flanked by two symmetrical slopes, consisting of two hills about 130 meters in altitude, situated both on the eastern and western sides of the settlement, while the entire valley stretches from north to south, towards the Tagus estuary, with Cabo Espichel on the horizon and routes to the south of the Portuguese maritime coast. Leceia is a place belonging to the parish of Barcarena, in Oeiras, with roots in the prehistoric occupation of the site. The locality is situated at the top of a steep slope, west of the Barcarena stream valley, whose natural resources facilitated the construction of recreational and leisure farms. Currently, it forms an urban continuum with the town of Barcarena. The oldest part of Leceia (Leceia de Baixo) is located near the Chalcolithic Hillfort of Leceia, known since 1878 in what is the largest prehistoric exploration area in Portugal. The settlement then expanded to the area known as Leceia de Cima, where the Church of Our Lady of Piety is located.
