Declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (1963), the village of Hostalric preserves one of the most remarkable monumental legacies of the Catalan medieval period and is protected by the imposing modern military fortress. Situated on an ancient volcano, the old medieval castle of the Viscounts of Cabrera maintained control over the Royal Road, halfway between Girona and Barcelona. From the 17th century onwards, it began to be transformed to adapt to the new times and the new defence strategies of the modern era. That is why, despite being a fortress, it is popularly known as Hostalric Castle. The spectacular wall stretches up to 600 metres and along its route there are 10 exceptionally well-preserved towers. There are magnificent views over the whole village, the Tordera valley, Montnegre and Montseny. The village is surrounded by gently sloping mountains with magnificent views, ideal for enjoying a fantastic setting for hiking and cycling. Hostalric enjoys an ideal location and very good communications. It has access to the AP-7 Girona motorway and the C-35 road. The Eix Transversal is just over 20 km from the town and the N-II is just a few minutes away. The Barcelona-Portbou railway line passes through the village and has a stop. Girona is 40 km away and Barcelona is 60 km away. Blanes, the nearest coastal town and the entrance to the Costa Brava, can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
