Rafina is located on the coast of Eastern and is the second largest port of the prefecture after Piraeus with high mobility to the Cyclades. In recent years Rafina has experienced great development and is practically a suburb of Athens, thanks to the Attiki Odos road which has improved access from the city center as it joins Marathonos Avenue in neighboring Pikermi. It is about 25 km from Athens. The main road of Eastern Attica, Marathonos Avenue, crosses it to the west, while Am.Fleming Avenue starts from Marathonos Avenue and ends a short distance from the city center and the port. The city covers an area of 19,000 acres and its population is 12,168 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census, while in the summer months it reaches 30,000- 50,000. It is densely populated in the center near the port but has large areas with parks and green spaces as well as two large beaches, the first one next to the port and the second one the popular Marikes beach in Avlaki in the south. It is bordered to the north by Mati, to the south by Artemis and to the east by the South Evian Gulf. Kallitechnoupoli and Neos Voutzas are the two large peripheral districts of Rafina west of Marathonos Avenue at the foothills of Penteli. Many holiday homes and permanent residences are built in these areas.
