Location: Verbania, Piedmont
On the very first hills of Verbania lie the villages of Biganzolo, Zoverallo, and Arizzano, now residential areas just a few minutes' drive from the center of Verbania Intra. In these areas, in the mid-1800s, Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann, one of the greatest mathematicians in history, also lived. The city of Verbania is instead the most populous center of Lake Maggiore and is formed by the union of Intra, Pallanza, and other small municipalities. Intra is the historic center of the town, highly recommended for a walk through the beautiful pedestrian center rich with shops and bars where you can enjoy an aperitif in the summer or a good hot chocolate in the winter. Walking along the scenic bike path on the lake, you can reach Pallanza on foot (in about 30 minutes from Intra); during the walk, you can first admire the futuristic shapes of the new "Il Maggiore" theater and then the famous botanical garden of Villa Taranto, open from March to October, which hosts a rich variety of flowers and rare plants, so much so that many consider it the most beautiful garden in Italy. After passing the small hill of "Castagnola," one of the city's most exclusive residential areas, you arrive at the center of Pallanza, home to the Museo del Paesaggio, which houses most of the works of the impressionist sculptor Paolo Troubetzkoy. At the end of the beautiful walk along the lakeside of Pallanza, you finally reach the district of Suna, a charming area rich with fine restaurants and bars, which extends to the slopes of Monterosso.
