A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Pisa preserves its centuries of history in its palaces and the visible remains scattered around the city. Not only treasures like the Leaning Tower and the incredible Piazza dei Miracoli, but one of the testimonies of its glorious past is the 12th-century city walls that still encompass what is considered the historic center of the city, with its four main districts divided by the Arno River. Many literary figures and scientists have praised the Lungarno of Pisa over the years, and today their names grace its banks, where some of the most illustrious palaces, once home to the most prestigious families, are situated. Pisa boasts a past of maritime power: in addition to being an important Roman port, it was one of the four Maritime Republics, whose trade brought substantial wealth to the city. But it is especially science that has made the city a thriving center of attraction: the birthplace of Galileo Galilei, it hosts the prestigious Sant'Anna and Normale Schools, as well as a rich university. The nerve center of city life is Borgo, between the Santa Maria and San Francesco districts, one of the main streets characterized by an arcade lined with elegant palaces dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, enlivened by stylish shops and venues. Dynamism and entertainment are guaranteed by the festivals and events that occupy Pisa's main cultural centers throughout the year, with a special mention of the Luminara di San Ranieri, a unique and characteristic light show that illuminates the river every June 16th in celebration of the patron saint. A few kilometers from the center is the San Rossore Park, once the summer residence of the President of the Republic and now a protected natural reserve. The city also boasts an exceptional location with its proximity to the Apuan Alps 50 km away and the Pisan Mountains close by, offering an excellent setting for trekking and mountain biking. Just 15 km away, you can reach the coast with its beaches and equipped lidos to enjoy a typical Italian summer. Here, the Pisa Marina is also located, from where you can set off for short sailing trips to the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. The port of Livorno, on the other hand, is just 25 km away and provides access to Corsica, Sardinia, and other European destinations. The city also has an airport, one of the main ones in Tuscany with national and international routes. Noteworthy is also the railway, whose connections allow reaching all other cities on the peninsula. In a 30-minute drive, you can discover Lucca and the culinary traditions of the hinterland, while the wonders of Florence are reachable in just an hour. Traveling 35 km, you reach Forte dei Marmi and Versilia.
