Die im Jahr 1122 erstmals erwähnte Stadt Plauen ist Kreisstadt des Vogtlandkreises und ein Oberzentrum im Südwesten des Freistaates Sachsen. Mit 65.808 Einwohnern (Stand 31.12.2022) in 39 Stadtteilen ist sie die fünfgrößte Stadt im Freistaat. Im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Stadt zu 75 Prozent zerstört, aber überwiegend wieder aufgebaut. Plauen wurde vor allem durch die Plauener Spitze bekannt und einst zu einem der wohlhabendsten Wirtschaftszentren Deutschlands. Neben Textilindustrie entwickelte sich eine leistungsfähige und vielfältige Maschinenbautradition. Die Stadt Leipzig erreicht man in ca. 150 Kilometern in nördlicher, die Stadt Dresden in ca. 150 Kilometern in östlicher Richtung.
