Die im Jahr 1122 erstmals erwähnte Stadt Plauen ist Kreisstadt des Vogtlandkreises und ein Oberzentrum im Südwesten des Freistaates Sachsen. Die Stadt Leipzig erreicht man in ca. 150 Kilometern in nördlicher, die Stadt Dresden in ca. 150 Kilometern in östlicher Richtung.
