E&V: What attracted you when you viewed the property?

First and foremost, the great location right on the edge of the forest was the deciding factor for me. It's just great for our large family and our dogs to live quietly and close to nature. But that's not all. As soon as I entered the house, I could feel how much love and concept had gone into it. The layout impressed me, as did the spaciousness and ultimately the potential to convert it so that it would be perfect for our family's needs.

E&V: So did you immediately have a vision of how you could redesign the house?

Actually, I immediately had ideas about how to change the floor plan. In particular, during the first viewing I could already imagine how an open-plan cooking and dining area would look. The many large windows were a huge plus for us. I immediately liked this light-flooded and open concept and we implemented it consistently in the house with light tones.

E&V: Did you have the support of an expert to advise and guide you?

We were very lucky that a good friend of ours took over the construction management. We went through the house with him again immediately after the first viewing. He had already given us an estimate of the conversion costs before we bought. And fortunately, he wasn't all that wrong!

E&V: The before and after pictures speak volumes. Can you still give us a brief overview of everything that has been changed?

It feels like everything! Starting with all the electrics, the bathrooms, flooring throughout the house, all the interior doors, the kitchen, the front door and the façade, which we painted. We kept the windows and the roof because of the good quality.

That's right, we invested a lot of time and did it ourselves. We have improved the house step by step, for example by repainting the chimney and the exterior façade. Next, we want to glaze the wooden staircase.

E&V: Do you have any advice for those who are faced with the decision to renovate or remodel a property?

It is immensely important to have a competent construction manager. In our case, it was ideal that a good friend who we could trust completely took on this task. If you don't have one, I would strongly advise you to do your research well in advance. Get several quotes and scrutinize them accordingly. It can also be helpful to ask around in your circle of acquaintances to get recommendations for tradespeople.

All in all, it's worth including existing properties in your search for your dream home. We would do it again at any time!
