Jork - the paradise in the Old Land

Cobblestone street with cafés and timber-framed homes in Harburg’s old town – attractive residential and mixed-use location

Less than 35 kilometers separate Jork in Lower Saxony from Hamburg city center. Between Stade and Hamburg Harburg, the small municipality with just over 12,000 inhabitants is picturesquely situated on the southern bank of the Elbe. Covering an impressive 62.26 square kilometers, the heart of the Altes Land offers plenty of space for fruit trees, but also for families, couples or singles and their properties. The romantic village has a lot to offer its residents and visitors. At first glance, time seems to have stood still a little in Jork. Charming half-timbered houses adorn the center of Jork and the banks of the Elbe as well as the various districts along the Este. There are no traffic jams or dense population in Jork. As the center of the largest fruit-growing region in Europe, Jork consists of seemingly endless rows of fruit trees. There are said to be around 20,000,000 trees that produce the famous apples as well as other trees that bear delicious fruit. The seven districts are generously spread out in between, where it is still possible to live comfortably and with plenty of open space.

Jork in the Altes Land - How it all began ..

The first document confirming the existence of the village of Jork dates back to 1221. Jork soon developed into the center of the Altes Land. in 1885, Jork became a district town in the Prussian province of Hanover. In 1932, the district was dissolved and became part of the district of Stade to the west of the Este, while the districts to the east of the Este became part of the district of Harburg. Although Jork thus relinquished its status as an administrative center, it has remained the epitome of the Alte Land and its picturesque landscapes to this day. Incidentally, the eastern districts of Hove, Ladekop and Moorende were returned from the district of Harburg to the municipality 40 years later when the unified municipality of Jork was created, which today belongs entirely to the district of Stade in Lower Saxony.

Jork: impressive nature from the Elbe island to the moor

The metropolis of Hamburg is growing and growing. New urbanizations are springing up everywhere, but living space is still scarce. It takes around 45 minutes to drive from the center of Hamburg to Jork. What awaits you there is so impressive that year after year many vacationers from all over Germany spend a few days or even weeks in the Altes Land. Here you can simply take a deep breath and relax. But you certainly won't get bored in Jork, regardless of whether you are visiting the town or staying in one of the beautiful properties there. You can discover sights and nature reserves everywhere in Jork and the surrounding area, such as the "Elbe + Islands" nature reserve or:

  • Marsh islands in the Lower Elbe: Hanskalbsand, Neßsand and Hahnöfersand

  • Borsteler Binnenelbe and Großes Brack nature reserve

  • Bogs near Buxtehude covering more than 1,300 hectares

  • Moorland belt nature reserve

Living, residing and buying unique properties in Jork

But Jork is not only surrounded by greenery, it is also an impressive place to live. The beautiful vacation region on the Elbe is located directly on the border with the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and is therefore also ideal for commuters. It is only a few kilometers to Airbus in Finkenwerder, which you can cover comfortably with a special bus line. The bus takes you quickly to Buxtehude station and from there to Harburg and Hamburg. The newly built A26 highway connects Jork with Stade and, in the future, with the Hanseatic city and its A7 and A1 highways. The purchase prices in Jork are still significantly lower than those of the Hamburg districts and are therefore considered an insider tip with its medium and good residential locations. You can find attractive condominiums in Jork from as little as 2,200 euros per square meter, although prices can easily rise to 4,000 euros depending on the property. Detached houses or unique farmhouses are available from as little as 225,000 euros up to 400,000 euros depending on size and fittings. Those who work from home can still buy affordable properties with an additional office in Jork. As the trend in 2021 is towards suburban locations in urban centers, a significant increase in property prices is also expected in Jork. This is especially true the further the A26 highway leads towards Hamburg. It is therefore worth buying real estate in Jork as early as possible.
