Mallorca is a wonderland for walkers and hikers and home to the Serra de Tramuntana, one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the whole of Spain. Stretching around 90 kilometres from Andratx in the southwest to Cap Formentor in the very northeast, the Tramuntana mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage site; and once you experience them ´live´, you easily understand why. A visual feast of dramatic peaks, breathtaking geographical curves and resplendent nature, it is no surprise that the Tramuntana mountains are beloved by cyclists, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. We have picked a few of the very best walks and hiking routes for you to enjoy, especially during autumn, when the weather is slightly cooler with bright blue skies.
The pretty mountain villages of Deià and Soller are unmissable attractions on the island’s western coast. Deià, a magnet for creatives and freethinkers, sits on a dramatic coastline with incredible sea views and plenty of hiking routes. A 9 kilometre trail leads from Deià to Soller, the stunning traditional Tramuntana village famous for its oranges that are in season from December through June. Remember to wear good hiking boots because this particular route is quite rocky. Alternatively, hike the more challenging 10 kilometre trail from Deià through the forest to the peak of Es Caragolí where you can enjoy impressive 360-degree views of the island’s northwest. These highly desirable areas have fantastic natural stone properties in the traditional villages and nestled in the rural surroundings.

Since the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range runs along the entire backbone of the island, there is an epic 135 kilometre ‘dry stone route’ from Port de Andratx to Pollensa. Divided into eight stages of varying difficulty, this route can be done in sections, and make sure you do your research because the help of a guide is required for parts of it. Of course, there are over 100 hiking routes in and around Andratx of varying lengths and difficulties to choose from. For example, the gentle 7.5 kilometre walk from Port de Andratx to pretty Sant Elm can be done in just over 2 hours. For a greater challenge, hike from Sant Elm to the Sa Trapa monastery, set in an isolated valley over dramatic cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean sea and the island of Dragonera. Alternatively, conquer the mountain of Galatzo to experience rural Mallorca at its finest on the 1000 meter steep climb to the summit. Wherever you decide to walk to or from, make sure you stop for a pre-hike breakfast or post-hike celebratory lunch in the town of Andratx where great cafés and restaurants serve delicious, nourishing dishes throughout the day. Port de Andratx is also a great spot to enjoy the very best restaurants, cafés and shops in the area as well as access to exclusive villas, townhouses and apartments with sea views.

At the far eastern end of the Tramuntana mountains lies Pollença, a traditional town with pretty streets and historical buildings. Set in a valley at the foot of the mountain range, there are a plethora of beautiful walking routes and hiking trails, and some spectacular properties for sale. One of the best trails to fully experience the surroundings is from the town of Pollença to Cala San Vicente, an easy 7 kilometre excursion that is also suitable for children. After the hike you will not only have the opportunity to refresh yourself in the crystal clear sea and lie on the beach, but also enjoy a wonderful view over the bay of Pollensa. There are countless other walks in the area, for example, up the fifteenth-century Lluc monastery, to the port of Pollensa, over to Alcudia, or to the rugged peninsula of Formentor. Whatever your fitness level, there are endless options to enjoy so that you can experience the real Mallorca at its most natural and beautiful.
