S’Almunia and Caló des Moró – Natural paradise in Southeast Mallorca

Aerial view of a rocky coastline with clear turquoise water

S’Almunia and Caló des Moró – two unique coves and one of Mallorca’s last remaining natural paradises.

Located in the southeast of the island, about six kilometres from Santanyí, these two breathtaking bays are a must-see. The little paradise of S’Almunia consists of a rocky cove, accessible via a short walk and a steep staircase. A hiking trail through a beautiful natural area leads to the stunning neighbouring bay of Caló des Moró. Here, you can fully immerse yourself in the impressive natural beauty of Mallorca.

A natural paradise on private land

What many do not know: the access paths to the coves are located on the private property of Maren and Hans-Peter Oehm, a Cologne-based architect who has worked in Santanyí for over 20 years. The family kindly allows visitors to pass through their land to enjoy this unique swimming experience. Unfortunately, the family frequently faces issues with litter, as many visitors leave their rubbish behind in the natural surroundings.

Foundation for nature conservation

To preserve these two pristine spots long-term, Maren and Hans-Peter Oehm founded the “Fundació Amics d’Es Caló des Moro – S’Almonia” in May 2014. The main goal of the foundation is to maintain and protect the roughly 40,000 m² natural paradise.

In the past, the land was heavily littered, trees had been cut down, and the soil was damaged. Thanks to the foundation’s commitment, the area has been cleaned and reforested with around 2,000 mainly native plants. Despite all efforts, only a few plants thrive – but many animals and birds have since found a new habitat here.

Improved infrastructure for visitors

For the past few years, the municipality of Santanyí has worked with police to regulate parking chaos. Since May 2017, access to the coves from Llombards has been completely closed (except for residents). Additionally, the municipality has set up a shuttle bus that connects Santanyí hourly with the bathing coves and Cala Llombards – a convenient and eco-friendly solution.
