Parzanica

For those looking to escape to the Italian countryside, there is perhaps no better location than the charming hamlet of Parzanica. The busy cities of Bergamo and Milan are 50 and 103km away respectively, allowing Parzanica to enjoy a sense of peaceful seclusion without being totally isolated. Buses travel regularly to Tavernola Bergamasca (15 minutes), while the major towns of Sarnico and Paratico are both around 30 minutes away.

Although Parzanica only has a few hundred residents, it still offers convenient delis and shops. Supermarket Tonni Iva and Alimarket Gabanelli di Corna Modestina both offer an assortment of cheeses, deli meats, fresh produce, delectable desserts, and remarkable local wines. A local pizzeria called Danesi Luisa is highly recommended and cooks up delicious recipes, while the town hall on Via Chiesa is home to the municipal library, and is an excellent source of information on local happenings and events in town.

At 750 meters above sea level, Parzanica finds itself on a natural rise overlooking the magnificence that is Lake Iseo. Numerous trails and scenic spots throughout the village compete with each other to offer the most beautiful views. Belvedere di Parzanica is one of the local favourites and offers other-worldly views of Monte Isola and the Camonica Valley, especially at night. Hidden in the picturesque forests just to the north, and through a pathway strewn with ancient paving stones, the stunning Santuario della Santissima Trinità church provides equally impressive views, as well as exquisite 15th century frescos inside its serene walls.

Back within the town, the 18th century Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Colombano church stands just across from the town hall, with an inspiring arched ceiling, as well as masterful carvings and artwork. The streets and cobblestone paths running throughout Parzanica wind between traditional Italian buildings, made with a combination of ancient stonework and more modern materials in smooth pastel whites, yellows and reds. Ubiquitous Italian balconies stand out, frequently adorned with manicured plants and hanging gardens, while red tiled roofs and warm wooden window shutters cement the area’s old-world charm. Streets like the Via Valle and Via Santella open up to a broader view of the surrounding hills and greenery, bordered by more traditional larger houses with fenced gardens, giving residents an interesting change in perspective.

Up in the hills next to Lake Iseo, Parzanica is a lovely comune blessed with tranquil isolation. It is far enough from major cities and hubs to serve as a relaxing getaway, without being so remote as to make contemporary living impossible. Its proximity to the natural wonders of the region, combined with its charming historic architecture and strong Italian soul, makes Parzanica an inviting choice for families and individuals looking to enjoy life in Lombardy’s spectacular countryside.
