Solto Collina

Solto Collina is an enchanting Italian comune in the province of Bergamo, just a few minutes from the magnificent Lake Iseo. Well serviced by the A4 and SS42 motorways, the cities of Milan and Bergamo can be reached in 1 hour 40, and 49 minutes respectively – via a scenic drive through the alluring landscape of Lombardy. Riva Di Solto’s ferry port is a quick 7 minute drive away, which allows you to explore the many interesting communities that surround the serene waters of Lake Iseo.

Nestled into Lombardy’s countryside, Solto Collina maintains its traditional Italian charm without sacrificing modern amenities. The town boasts a postal service, pharmacy, banks, salons, schools, and number of boutiques, while markets like Fresco Mio supply every day necessities. Buses regularly pass through the area, connecting it with its neighbouring locales – such as Esmate, Piangaiano, Fontane, and of course Riva di Solto. Piangaiano, specifically, is only 3 minutes away, while both Castro and Lovere are only 10 minutes. This puts several other services, including clinics, a general hospital, police, even more commercial shops, and a movie theatre all within easy reach of this attractive municipality.

Solto Collina enjoys an abundance of beautiful architecture apparent in the churches that dot the town and surrounding villages. The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta is particularly stunning, with its ancient bell tower and gorgeously decorated interior, altar, and carvings. The Chiesa di S. Gaudenzio in nearby Esmate (1.9km) is also worth a mention, as is the majestic Parrocchia Di S. Nicola Vescovo in Riva di Solto (4.5km). Recreational activities such as sports and nature walks are popular, as attested to by soccer fields and the Tappa verso oratorio S. Defendente hiking area – at the top of which is the old Chiesa di San Defendente church, offering breathtaking views over Lake Iseo, the Camonica Valley, and the many settlements dotting the coast.

Timeless stonework persists in the town’s architectural style, blending seamlessly with wood and more modern materials. Walking through some of its more narrow streets one is reminded of an older Italy, lost to time – with characteristic wooden shutters, lovely hanging gardens, and ancient twisting alleys, begging to be explored. Some of these streets, like the Via Castello, retain their old cobblestone character. Its wider main streets offer an entirely different atmosphere. Here, intermittent views of the glorious countryside are shared with commercial establishments, larger fenced in homes, and enticing restaurants and cafés. Everywhere, iconic Italian balconies and red tile roofs predominate, as do warm and inviting pastel colours.

The medieval settlement of Solto Collina has a rich and long history, yet remains accessible and convenient. Contemporary commercial shops and services stand side by side with the cobblestones and stonework of history. With other major hubs within driving distance, and bountiful nature such as Lake Iseo right at your door step, it is plain to see why Solto Collina is such a sought after location.
