Top Hiking Routes in Northern Mallorca

As the intensity of the summer sun begins to wane, the north of Mallorca becomes a hub of activity for walkers and ramblers. For those considering buying or renting out a holiday home, it’s worth noting that there is strong demand for apartment and villa rentals in autumn and winter from hikers, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The UNESCO-protected Serra de Tramuntana offers spectacular coastal paths overlooking hidden coves, as well as trails that wind into the mountain valleys, following dried-up torrents and passing by stalagmite caves — often home to rare bird species.
Despite its popularity among hikers, many routes remain wonderfully quiet, apart from the occasional family of goats. You often feel as if you have the mountains all to yourself. The area caters to all abilities, with easy trails for beginners and more challenging summits that rise over 1,000 metres (there are five of these peaks on the island).
The local government has invested in improving and maintaining the trails, which are now well-marked with wooden signposts every few kilometres. However, it’s still wise to bring a reliable map and provisions before setting off on your adventure.

Torrent de Pareis
One of the island’s most famous hikes, this route follows the Torrent de Pareis from Escorca down through a dramatic gorge to the beach at Sa Calobra. It’s not recommended for inexperienced hikers, as it takes around five hours and involves scrambling over boulders and squeezing through narrow rock gaps. The scenery is often likened to a miniature Grand Canyon. Due to the risk of flooding, it’s generally only advisable to attempt this hike from early May to late September.
Puig de Massanella from Lluc Monastery
At 1,364 metres, Puig de Massanella is the highest accessible peak on Mallorca. From the summit, you can enjoy spectacular views across Es Pla, the island’s main plain, and towards Puig Major, the highest peak. The challenging circular trail begins at Lluc Monastery, winding through oak forest. Enthusiasts can also detour to the summit of Puig d’en Galileu. Allow a full day — about eight hours — for this hike.
The ultimate challenge: GR221 Dry Stone Route
Spanning 135 km (84 miles), the GR221 runs through the Serra de Tramuntana from Puerto Andratx to Pollensa. It follows ancient pathways and is divided into eight stages of varying difficulty. For those committed to the full route, there are refugios (mountain huts) available for overnight stays.
Ermita de la Victoria Coll Baix Loop
The lower mountain range behind Alcudia offers fantastic hiking options for all levels. Starting at the Refugio de Coll Baix, you can hike down to the secluded cove of Coll Baix, which is otherwise only accessible by boat.
Ses Fonts Ufanes
A must-see in winter, this unique natural phenomenon near Campanet appears after heavy autumn and winter rains. Underground reservoirs fill up until water reaches the surface, creating bubbling natural springs. Located in a forest near Finca Gabelli Petit, the springs are well-signposted. Timing is crucial, as the spectacle only lasts a few days.
