The magic of San Juan Night 2026 in Gran Canaria: history, full programme and guide

A bonfire on the sand of a beach at sunset, with flames glowing and the ocean in the background under a sky with scattered clouds.

Is there anything more Canarian than the smell of a bonfire at midnight on 23 June, feet in the sand and the Atlantic stretching out in front of you? San Juan Night 2026 in Gran Canaria is far more than a party: it falls on the birthday of the island's capital, brings thousands of people together around the fire and welcomes summer in the most magical way imaginable.

In 2026, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria turns 548 years old — counting from that morning of 24 June 1478 when Juan Rejón established the Real de Las Palmas beside the Guiniguada ravine. And the City Council is not celebrating quietly. June is also proving a historic month for the island: just two weeks before San Juan, Pope Leo XIV visits Gran Canaria on 11 June in an event that has put the island firmly on the world map.

The 2026 Foundation Festival programme, presented by Mayor Carolina Darias and Culture Councillor Josué Íñiguez, is one of the most intense and emotionally charged in recent years. There is a reason for that: the tribute the city has chosen to pay to Dania Dévora, Honorary Citizen of Las Palmas, festival herald (pregonera) in 2019 and a defining voice of Canarian culture, who passed away in March 2026.

Here you will find the history of the tradition and the founding of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the full programme, artists, times and everything you need to make the most of San Juan Night in Gran Canaria.

San Juan Night in Gran Canaria: tradition, fire and Las Canteras

San Juan Night is an ancient celebration marking the summer solstice, rich in rituals passed down through generations. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria it carries a double significance: thousands of people gather on the famous Playa de Las Canteras, rated one of the best urban beaches in Europe, to enjoy a night of fire, music and tradition; and the following day, 24 June, the city celebrates its own birthday — in 2026, 548 years since the conquistador Juan Rejón founded the Real de Las Palmas beside the Guiniguada ravine in 1478, giving rise to the historic Vegueta neighbourhood.

Bonfires are prohibited on Las Canteras for environmental reasons, but the celebration has not lost a single ounce of its intensity: fireworks at midnight, live music and the purifying ritual bath that the bravest wade into when the clock strikes twelve — welcoming the new cycle with hope. To relive what the night was like last year, read our chronicle of San Juan Night 2025 in Las Palmas.

A year marked by the tribute to Dania Dévora in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Some years the festivities carry the weight of grief, and 2026 is one of them. Dania Dévora — actress, writer, theatre director and one of the most beloved voices in Canarian culture — passed away in March of this year. An Honorary Citizen of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, she was the festival herald (pregonera) of the 2019 Foundation Festival and left behind a performance that remains one of the most memorable in the event's recent history.

The City Council has decided that these festivities should, in part, be a tribute. On Thursday 18 June, Plaza de Santa Ana will host "Music and Verses for Dania Dévora", an event dedicated entirely to her memory through music and poetry. A gesture that says a great deal about this city's character: here, people celebrate without forgetting those who made them better.

Mayor Darias noted that the programme integrates "tradition and culture" to welcome summer with a distinctive identity and a clear commitment to local artists.

2026 Foundation Festival programme: events from 12 to 22 June

The 2026 Foundation Festival is not just about the night of the 23rd. It is two weeks of activity beginning on 12 June and running through to the 26th, with over forty events. The full programme is available at lpacultura.com.

Friday 12 June

The festival opens with a concert by Abraham Cupeiro, a Galician musician specialising in ancient instruments. An opening that sets the tone for a festival that places artistic quality at its heart.

Saturday 13 June

Parque Doramas hosts two sessions of "Borondona y Arigato, cuento que te canto": one mid-morning and one in the early afternoon. A perfect plan for families with young children.

Sunday 14 June

"Music in the heart of Vegueta" changes its schedule in 2026, moving to Sunday morning. Concerts in the most iconic spaces of the historic neighbourhood — squares, patios and volcanic stone streets — with the cathedral as backdrop. A morning to wander the oldest streets of Las Palmas with live music.

Wednesday 17 June

Concert by Mingo Quintana and José Artiles, two musicians deeply committed to the Canarian musical identity. An intimate and moving evening.

Thursday 18 June

"Music and Verses for Dania Dévora" at Plaza de Santa Ana. The centrepiece of the tribute will bring together artists and people close to Dania in a space charged with symbolism.

Friday 19 June

Olga Cerpa y Mestisay present "La costa de los cantares", with guest musicians from Guinea-Bissau, including singer Eneida Marta. A one-of-a-kind Atlantic dialogue at Plaza de Santa Ana.

Saturday 20 June

Morning: Doramas with "La banda mocosa" and a circus show. At 19:30, the Festival Elepegecé kicks off at Plaza de Santa Ana with Morgan, Los Vinagres, Good Franco and Baldosa, plus DJ Aquiles Orquídea. Running until midnight.

Sunday 21 June

Final family event at Doramas with "La canción de Adji".

Throughout the month — Historic night walk

Chronicler Juan José Laforet will lead a nocturnal walk through historic Vegueta, with stops at Callejón de la Audiencia, Casa Regental, Calle Verneau and Plaza de San Agustín.

The night of 23 June at Las Canteras: fireworks, concerts and tradition

Tuesday 23 June is the big night. Las Canteras transforms into the epicentre of San Juan Night in Gran Canaria and the city beats with a pulse that only happens once a year. Confirmed programme from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council:

20:00 — Auditorio Alfredo Kraus: Honours and Distinctions ceremony

Mayor Carolina Darias will preside over the presentation of awards to individuals and institutions who have enriched the city.

22:00 — Plaza de la Música: Los Salvapantallas

Pop-rock with the Atlantic as backdrop — warming things up before midnight.

00:00 — Fireworks from Los Muellitos

The moment everyone waits for: 214 kilograms of gunpowder and fourteen minutes of spectacle. Visible from any point along the Las Canteras seafront.

After the fireworks — Orquesta Vulkano

17 musicians with an eclectic set spanning popular, Latin and Canarian rhythms. From 23:30, uninterrupted concerts at Plaza de la Música for those who want to keep the night going until sunrise.

24 June in Gran Canaria: public holiday and the city's 548th anniversary

Wednesday 24 June 2026, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria turns exactly 548 years old. The date is a local public holiday. Throughout the day there will be official ceremonies, guided tours of historic Vegueta and a free concert at 18:00 that formally closes the festivities. Plaza de Santa Ana and its surroundings once again become the heart of the celebration, as they have been ever since the first chapel rose beside the Real de Las Palmas almost five and a half centuries ago.

San Juan Night in Gran Canaria beyond Las Palmas: Arucas, Telde and Sardina

The San Juan festivities are not exclusive to the capital. Several municipalities have their own programme and, for many residents, the best San Juan Night is found precisely outside Las Palmas.

Arucas

One of the most extensive programmes on the island, with activities running through to 4 July. On the night of the 23rd: concert by Maldita Nerea, fireworks and DJ Abián Reyes. On the 24th: folk music with A.F. Beñesmen and a concert by Los 600.

Telde

The San Juan Bautista Festivities begin on 13 June and run through to 29 June. Night of the 23rd: bonfire at Siete Puentes, the Mechones de Melenara (XVIII edition) and DJ Herrera. On the 24th: a weavers' gathering, traditional games and a religious procession in honour of the patron saint.

Sardina del Norte (Gáldar)

At 22:00, a street parade with the Banda Archipiélago. At 23:00, Línea DJ. At midnight, aquatic and aerial fireworks over the beach. If you want a quieter San Juan, away from the crowds and with all the authenticity of a northern village, Sardina is your destination.

Where to have dinner before San Juan Night at Las Canteras

The Las Canteras seafront has restaurants of every kind, from beachside terrace bars to Canarian cuisine in the side streets. The key is to book a table before 21:00: after that, venues fill up and availability is scarce.

If you prefer a more relaxed dinner, Vegueta and Triana have excellent options 15–20 minutes' walk away, letting you arrive afterwards with time to find a good spot along the promenade. You can also dine early and position yourself on the seafront from 22:00 to catch the Los Salvapantallas concert before the fireworks.

Getting to Las Canteras on 23 June: transport and parking

Public transport — The smartest option. Global runs night-time reinforcements on 23 June with special frequencies to Las Canteras seafront. Check routes at globalbus.net in advance.

By car — Avoid it. Traffic around Las Canteras grinds to a halt from 22:00 and parking becomes virtually impossible. If there is truly no alternative, the car parks in La Isleta or Ciudad Jardín are further away but within 15–20 minutes' walk.

From the south of the island — Shuttle services from designated car parks are the most comfortable option. Taxis or ride-hailing apps work well for the journey there; allow for waiting time on the way back.

What time to arrive? — If you want a direct view of Los Muellitos, be there before 23:00. The area fills up from 22:00. The area around Auditorio Alfredo Kraus and El Rincón are less crowded and offer equally good views.

San Juan Night in Gran Canaria with children: practical tips

The fireworks begin at midnight, which makes for a long night for younger visitors. To get the most out of it without exhausting them:

  • Choose a spot near Auditorio Alfredo Kraus or the El Rincón area: less crowded, easier access and perfect views of the fireworks display.

  • Bringing a blanket or folding chair makes a real difference if you arrive early.

  • For sensitive ears, a good pair of noise-reducing headphones works very well during the fireworks.

  • If the children are very young, the Las Canteras concert at 22:00 is a good starting point — if they tire before midnight, you can watch the fireworks from the promenade on the move and head home without complications.

You can also take advantage of the children's events at Doramas (13, 20 and 21 June) so the little ones can enjoy the festivities in the daytime, without the late night.

What to bring to San Juan Night at Las Canteras

  • A warm layer: the sea breeze cools things down even in June. Bring a jacket.

  • Comfortable shoes: you will be on your feet for hours on the promenade and the sand.

  • Something to sit on: if you arrive early to secure a good spot near Los Muellitos, a small cushion or blanket changes the whole experience.

  • A water bottle: bars and kiosks along the promenade are swamped before midnight.

  • No car: parking is a serious problem that night. Sort out your transport before you leave.

The water ritual on San Juan Night in Gran Canaria

According to Canarian tradition, washing your face with seawater at midnight on San Juan brings good luck and purifies body and mind. At Las Canteras, it is one of the most moving moments of the night: thousands of people enter the water together as the clock strikes twelve, leaving behind whatever is negative and welcoming the new cycle with hope.

A ritual with centuries of history that retains all its symbolic power. If you want to experience the festival in its most authentic form — the same celebration that generations before you have lived in this very spot — this is the moment you cannot miss.

Living and investing in Gran Canaria: what summer confirms

There are moments when Gran Canaria reminds you exactly why you chose this island. San Juan Night is one of them. Thousands of people from over a hundred nationalities sharing beach, fire and music at Las Canteras; northern villages keeping a centuries-old tradition alive; historic neighbourhoods lit up by unforgettable cultural evenings. This is Gran Canaria: an island that knows what it has, and celebrates it.

At Engel & Völkers Gran Canaria we see this effect every summer. International events, quality of life and the connectivity of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria generate sustained residential demand that does not recognise a low season. Buyer profiles vary widely: European families working remotely who are looking for a second home with permanent spring, investors seeking high-yield short-term rental properties, and individuals who have simply decided they want to live better.

The areas with the highest demand right now include Las Canteras and Guanarteme in the capital, the Maspalomas–Meloneras corridor for those seeking luxury and short-term rental returns, and the north of the island — municipalities such as Arucas or the area around Gáldar — for buyers who value authenticity and more accessible prices without sacrificing amenities.
