    Aosta Valley: the pearl of the Alps

    Famous worldwide for its nature, history, and food and wine excellence, the Aosta Valley is Italy’s smallest region, with a surface area of 3,263 km², and also the least populated, with 126,935 inhabitants. The entire territory is mountainous.

    A distinctive feature is its extensive borders: to the north with Switzerland, to the west with France, and to the southeast with Piedmont. Among its peaks are the highest in Europe: Mont Blanc (4,810 m), Monte Rosa (4,634 m), the Matterhorn (4,634 m), and Gran Paradiso (4,061 m). Only 20% of the territory lies below 1,500 meters above sea level—essentially a large main valley crossed by the Dora Baltea River, a major tributary of the Po, collecting water from all the lateral valleys.

    The Aosta Valley is an important link between the Po Valley and transalpine Europe. To facilitate communication with neighboring countries, the Mont Blanc Tunnel (12 km) connects Italy to France, and the Great St. Bernard Tunnel (6 km) connects Italy to Switzerland.

    Abundant snowfall has enabled the development of major winter sports resorts, boosting tourism and making places like Courmayeur, Cervinia, and Gressoney internationally famous. The Aosta Valley offers endless attractions: alpine skiing, off-piste skiing, and cross-country skiing in winter; hiking, trail running, paragliding, mountain biking, downhill, rafting, climbing, and golf in summer—with courses located in stunning spots such as Val Ferret and Cervinia. An ideal destination for a family day out surrounded by typical Alpine flora and fauna is the renowned Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy’s oldest national park.

    In terms of food and wine, the region boasts typical products that reflect the alpine territory’s history and identity through their unique flavors, using high-quality raw ingredients and traditional production techniques. Protected specialties such as Fontina, Fromadzo, Jambon de Bosses, and Lardo di Arnad, along with cheeses, cured meats, wines from the highest vineyards in Europe, game, polenta concia, chestnuts, apples, honey, and much more, are all delicacies frequently found on Aosta Valley tables. To distinguish itself in culinary excellence, a local brand called “Saveurs du Val d’Aoste” was created to protect traditional local products.
