Val d'Orcia's Cypresses

The most famous Cypresses in the world enter the top ten of Wikimedia

A cluster of tall cypress trees stands on a rolling, barren landscape under a cloudy sky, casting long shadows on the ground.

The most famous cypress trees in the world are those of San Quirico d'Orcia, and this is certainly not new. Every day they are admired, painted, photographed by so many people that they have become the symbol of the Tuscan and Italian landscape all over the world.

Another certificate, which enhances the prestige of the famous countryside of the surrounding countryside in San Quirico d'Orcia, comes this time from the Wiki Loves Monuments competition that unveiled the photographs of the winners of the seventh Italian edition. In the Top 10, in fact, two photos have the cypresses of San Quirico as their subject. Two very different images, but both suggestive and that represent the beauty of Val d'Orcia, the true and original one.

Having two images among the first ten photos classified on several tens of thousands of images in the competition is certainly a great recognition and a confirmation that the celebrated landscape of the Val d'Orcia represents a tangible and intangible heritage for current and future generations.

With more than 29,000 photographs of Italian monuments made by over 1,000 photographers, "choosing the best shots was not at all simple for the national jury of the competition" - explain the organizers -, composed of three Wikipedians experts and three well-known photographers: authority of digital imaging Marianna Santoni, the president of the Milan Photographic Circle Lucia L. Esposto and the well-known journalist and photographer Settimio Benedusi, who also presided over the jury this year.

The competition saw sixth place in the picture of the cypresses of San Quirico entitled "The Solitary", by Claudio Minghi, with this motivation: "The linear colour of the composition is interrupted by a ray of sunshine and from the verticality of the tree: a scenic use of natural light that makes the landscape almost metaphysical ". In ninth place, the photo with the crown of Cipressi entitled "The cypresses of Val D'Orcia", by Carlo Cattaneo, with the motivation: "a great classic revisited with extreme stylistic correctness and a singular chromatic range ".
