Tapas, an essential symbol of Spanish culinary culture, are similar to appetizers. They offer a unique dining experience where you can sample small portions of tasty snacks as much as you like. To further promote the delicious tapas and their rich history, the coastal town of Torrevieja has introduced an innovative tapas celebration called La Ruta de las Tapas, every spring and autumn, usually around April and November. The festival, which quickly gained popularity, attracts tourists from Europe and other parts of the world. The aim of the event is to offer the community an exciting way to savour each carefully curated authentic Spanish tapa as well as its modern versions at a very affordable price.

Types of tapas during the festival

During the Tapas Route Festival, two types of tapas are offered as part of the competition. The first category is the Traditional Tapas which are tapas prepared in the authentic Spanish way with locally sourced ingredients. The second category is the Tapas de Autor or gourmet tapas, featuring tapas recipes with contemporary techniques and flavours. You may be surprised to see some modern fusions such as Indian, French and English Tapas included on the menu. The festival usually lasts two weeks, with an average of 30 participating establishments, between restaurants, tapas bars and pubs.

Tapas Route Awards Ceremony

The culmination of the Tapas Route festival is the awards ceremony. Throughout the festival, more than 42.000 tapas are served, enjoyed and judged by locals and tourists along the tapas route. To make it more attractive, the names of the guests who vote also have the chance to win special prizes. The Tapas Route is one of the most anticipated gastronomic events in the city, promoting Torrevieja as a promising gastronomic destination.

If you happen to visit the city outside of the festival dates, I recommend that you make time to visit the restaurants and tapas bars from previous editions and try their winning tapas, which are on the best-seller list.
