With its steep walls rising to over one hundred meters, the Timpa of Acireale offers panoramic views of great beauty, one of the most beautiful perspectives of the entire Ionian coast. A promontory close to the coast of Acireale, about 6 km long, that extends from Acque Grandi in the district of Capomulini to the district of Santa Maria degli Ammalati. The entire area is a true open-air natural laboratory, a Nature Reserve that extends over an area of 265 hectares, characterized by faults with dense vegetation and imposing lava stratifications with sections overlooking the sea with columnar basalts, pebbly beaches and ancient terraces with dry stone walls marked by 'saje,' the ancient irrigation canals of Arab tradition that for over a millennium have exploited the natural slope from Mount Etna to the sea.

Thanks to its particular conformation, which makes access difficult in much of the Reserve, the territory is largely absolutely untouched, despite being inserted in a particularly anthropized context. At the foot of the central section of the reserve is the fishing village of Santa Maria La Scala, which can also be reached by a staircase that starts from Acireale and crosses the central part of the Timpa (called the 'chiazzette').

Aerial view of a picturesque Sicilian fishing village. A city port with numerous moored boats is in the foreground, surrounded by black lava rocks. Houses with red roofs climb up a green and steep terrain, with buildings extending from the coast to the hills behind. The deep blue Mediterranean Sea laps against the rocky coast, while the urban settlement develops harmoniously in the volcanic landscape.

Places not to miss

  • Acque Grandi: one of the most intact sections of the Timpa. Its entrance is located next to the small church of Madonna dell'Aiuto.

  • Santa Caterina and Acqua Ferro: on the north side of the Belvedere, via Acqua del Ferro descends toward the coast, where there is a freshwater spring.

  • Chiazzette: the most accessible route for those who want to visit the Reserve, offers splendid panoramas of the Ionian coast

  • Santa Maria La Scala: at the foot of the Timpa, a fishing village that constitutes the closest access to the sea

  • Santa Tecla: northeast of Acireale, a seaside and residential center with its "symbol" of Torre del Greco
