Pozzillo
A small sea village
&w=1920&q=75)
To the north of Acireale, descending towards the sea, through dense citrus groves, one arrives at the village of Pozzillo.
Its name comes from the Sicilian word “puzziddu,” meaning “small point”; it was around this "point," where in the 1500s there was a church, that the small seaside village developed. Originally, the fishing village extended about a kilometer along the coast, but over the centuries, the storms rendered the small church on the "pizziddu," dedicated to Santa Maria Stella del Mare, and the nearby houses unusable. Thus, in 1786, both the church (which was rededicated to Santa Margherita) and the entire village were rebuilt higher up and further from the sea, with a different layout. Noteworthy is the beautiful hand-carved lava stone portal.
Pozzillo still retains its nature as an authentic seaside village, celebrating its fishing heritage with two festivals held every year in July: the swordfish festival and the octopus festival.
The view of Mount Etna is magnificent, and the setting guarantees the residents a tranquility like few other towns along this stretch of coast, where even in August it is still possible to find yourself almost alone, swimming among the lava rocks.
