San Giovanni Li Cuti
The hidden small village
&w=1920&q=75)
Entering San Giovanni Li Cuti is like stepping out of a time machine. This ancient seaside village seems to have hidden itself from the city over the centuries, with the seafront marking its boundary from the frantic world behind it. Its old houses, the black sand beach, and “li cuti lisci” – smooth volcanic rocks polished by the sea – make it the most distinctive beach in the city.
In its small harbor, which can be admired from the most picturesque square in the area, the work of a few fishermen keeps its tradition alive. Even today, there are those who sit for hours mending fishing nets, as if time doesn’t matter to them.
In the evening, San Giovanni Li Cuti becomes the heart of Catania’s nightlife, and not just in the summer. Bars and restaurants, some of which offer creative Sicilian cuisine where you can taste high-quality local products.
There are so few historic houses in this village that living here is truly a privilege. It’s like living in a small town with all the benefits of the city: next to the bike path along the seafront, just five minutes on foot from Corso Italia and Piazza Europa, in a well-served area with public transport and the nearby metro station at Piazza Galatea.
