Since 2010, Engel & Völkers in Berlin has been offering its employees a shared CrossFit training session at myleo twice a week. Similar to circuit training, participants train very effectively and intensely within a short period of time. Rackham F. Schröder is Managing Director at Engel & Völkers, initiator of the sports program, and an active member of the training group. He shared with us in an interview why it makes sense to push your limits together and really work yourself out.

Why does sport play an important role at Engel & Völkers?

Rackham F. Schröder: Successful athletes and high-performing sales professionals have more in common than one might initially assume. There are many parallels, for example in how goals are pursued, both at work and in sport. In CrossFit, everyone goes to their performance limit. Those who are focused and embrace healthy and fair competition can transfer a great deal of this mindset to their job. Personal motivation and commitment must be high, because in the end, individual results are rewarded. At Engel & Völkers, just as in sport, milestone goals are defined and pursued together in order to support employees in the best possible way. This is the only way to achieve the greatest possible success in the end. At the same time, having a sense for the group is also important, because our work is about bringing two or more parties together. In plain terms, this means: communicating well, finding compromises, and always proceeding with a clear focus on objectives.

How is the job of a real estate agent connected to the power workout?

R.F.S.: Real estate brokerage is a multifaceted job that demands a great deal from our employees. They must be technically proficient, have excellent communication skills, show perseverance, assert themselves against colleagues and competitors, and also be able to take setbacks. And as is always the case in life, challenges are best mastered when they are tackled together. There is nothing better than really pushing your limits and experiencing colleagues doing the same. Despite the strong focus on individual performance, this is incredibly bonding, both on a sporting and a professional level.

Why CrossFit?

R.F.S.: I have known Leo Löhr for a long time because he supported me as a personal trainer. When he told me about the myleo concept in 2010, I thought it was great that we could help him find a suitable space. The idea of offering our own Engel & Völkers training sessions quickly emerged. They were so well received that we now meet twice a week, and have been doing so for seven years now. The training sessions are short, but extremely effective. Exactly right for us. In our CrossFit group, trainees train alongside sales colleagues, managers, and the executive management. This not only allows people to get to know each other well; often, one or two business ideas even emerge.
