Vulcano is the southernmost island of the Aeolian archipelago and therefore the closest to the Sicilian coast. It is very well connected to Sicily, as most connections to the Aeolian Islands have Vulcano as their first stop, taking less than an hour to travel from Milazzo, less than 2 from Messina and less than 3 from Reggio Calabria. It is also very well connected to the other islands of the archipelago.
It has an extension of 20 square kilometres and owes its name to the presence of the Fossa volcano, predominant over the whole island, and Vulcanello, located further north and joined by an isthmus to the main island.
The harbour of Vulcano, in the northern part, is also the area where most of the housing and the most frequented beaches are concentrated, such as the Sabbie Nere or Acque Calde, where there are small gaseous outflows that make its waters unique. The Piano area, on the other hand, is the highest part of the island, located in the central part, where there is one of the most beautiful viewpoints, from which it is possible to see a good part of the Aeolian Islands: Capo Grillo. Further south is the Gelso area, with exclusive beaches.
Vulcano remains an island little contaminated by society, which knows how to offer a lot on a naturalistic level. The most famous activity is the ascent to the crater, averaging about forty minutes, which then repays with a very breathtaking view.
