Scena – South Tyrolean charm above the rooftops of Merano The municipality of Schenna (Ital. Scena) is located on a sunny plateau above the spa town of Merano and is one of South Tyrol's most popular holiday destinations. With around 3,000 inhabitants, it stretches from 600 up to 2,800 meters in elevation and includes the villages of Verdins, St. Georgen, Talle, and the wide Hirzer alpine region. Schenna uniquely combines alpine character with Mediterranean flair – a blend reflected in its landscapes, architecture, cuisine, and way of life. Thanks to its prime location on the southwest slope of the Ifinger mountain, Schenna enjoys a mild climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. This allows for the growth of not only grapes, apples, and chestnuts, but also palms, cypresses, and oleanders. The area is crisscrossed with hiking trails, from easy panoramic paths to challenging mountain tours. A particularly popular destination is the Hirzer Alpine area, accessible by cable car. The cultural heart of the village is Schenna Castle, built in the 14th century and purchased in the 19th century by Archduke Johann of Austria. Today, it houses a significant collection of weapons, paintings, and furniture, along with the Archduke’s mausoleum. The parish church and the adjacent old Gothic church also testify to the village’s deep historical and religious roots. Schenna masterfully blends tradition with modern hospitality. Whether staying in family-run hotels, elegant chalets, or rustic farmhouses, visitors enjoy an authentic and welcoming atmosphere. Numerous events animate the village throughout the year, such as the autumn cattle drive, the Grape Festival, the Bergler Harassl, or traditional music concerts by the local band. Thanks to its close proximity to Merano (just a 10-minute drive), guests can also enjoy a rich cultural offer, including the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, the Merano thermal baths, or events like the Merano Music Weeks. At the same time, Schenna remains a tranquil oasis set in a stunning natural landscape, with panoramic views over the Adige Valley, the Texel Group, and the distant Dolomites. Schenna is more than just a holiday destination – it’s a place in South Tyrol to fall in love with.
