San Roque is a Spanish municipality and city located in the Strait of Gibraltar area, that is, at the southeastern end of the province of Cádiz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It belongs to the Campo de Gibraltar comarca and its association of municipalities. It is the third city in its comarca, part of the Campo de Gibraltar metropolitan area, and the eleventh in the province.
San Roque preserves all the symbols and titles enjoyed by Gibraltar during the period of Spanish presence.
The municipality’s main population center, known as San Roque Centro or the urban core, is located in the middle of the Bay of Algeciras and concentrates approximately 40% of the municipality’s population. The rest of San Roque’s residents live in about a dozen neighborhoods spread throughout the municipal area.
San Roque’s economy is based on the chemical, oil, and energy industries; the municipality contains Andalusia’s most important industrial estate, which includes the Gibraltar–San Roque refinery and a power plant. The industrial sector is complemented by tourism, especially high-end tourism, focused on the luxury development of Sotogrande and the Valderrama golf course, host to major European and world championships, such as the 1997 Ryder Cup.
