The history of Düsternbrook dates back to the 18th century when it was part of the Düsternbrooker Gehölz, originally belonging to the village of Brunswik. The area was initially known as 'Herrschaftliche Gehölze' and later as 'Königliches Gehege' during the Danish rule. Düsternbrook saw development with the establishment of a forestry nursery in 1784 and the construction of the Garden Pavilion and Seebadeanstalt in the early 19th century. In 1869, Düsternbrook was incorporated into Kiel. Today, Düsternbrook is known for its villas and as the location of the state government buildings, including the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag and several state ministries. The district is also home to the Institute for World Economics and the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research. Düsternbrook features a promenade along the Kieler Förde, the Düsternbrooker Gehölz, the Kieler Yacht-Club with the Olympiahafen Düsternbrook, and the Blücherbrücke, which has been a long-standing berth for the sailing training ship Gorch Fock. Düsternbrook is bordered by the districts of Wik, Blücherplatz, Brunswik, Damperhof, Altstadt, and the Kieler Förde.
