General information about Sanderau

With 13,437 inhabitants and 8,509 inhabitants per square kilometer, the

Sanderau is the most densely populated district in Würzburg.

Sanderau has a very interesting demographic composition, as it is home to a large number of young people as well as many senior citizens. Despite the high proportion of students and young families, the district has the oldest population. For this reason, it is very important to build future-proof bridges between the generations and use demographic strategies to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Sanderau is receiving help by participating in a four-year pilot program in which experts will address the individual challenges of the district and aim to bring the different generations together through projects and initiatives.

The district consists mainly of apartment buildings, housing estates and very few single-family homes. This also gives rise to the dense composition of the population, as almost every plot of land is built up with multi-party houses with many residential units. If you look at Sanderau, you can see a certain dynamism in the architecture of the district: there are some large high-rise buildings in Königsberger Straße, where the streetcar terminus is located, but also many new buildings and some Art Nouveau buildings, which were rebuilt in the old style after the war.

Many of the new buildings were constructed in the post-war period and were based on an architectural style in which function determines form. This style does not look very attractive, but is incredibly practical and one of the reasons for the rapid reconstruction of many cities and countries after the Second World War.

St. Andrew's Church also embodies this style: from the outside it looks very chunky and concrete-heavy, but from the inside it is very attractively decorated and furnished.

To get to know Sanderau better, it makes sense to divide it into three sections:

The Hintere Sanderau

In the southernmost part of Sanderau, between Arndtstraße and the former S.Oliver Arena (now the TecTake Arena), there are a number of important institutions and landmarks in Sanderau.

The TecTake Arena is the home of the Würzburger Baskets, who play in the German Basketball League and are a well-known team throughout Germany. On the grounds of the Würzburg gymnastics club you will find a sports hall, a huge sports ground where the annual national youth games take place and the Greek restaurant "Zur Feggrube".

Directly on the Main along the cycle path in the direction of Randersacker is the Graf-Luckner Weiher and around it numerous barbecue areas, which invite an increasing number of Würzburg residents to relax together in the summer. Directly opposite the TecTake Arena is a miniature golf course.

The Klara-Oppenheimer-Schule looks after around 3200 vocational students in commercial, domestic and social professions. In general, Hintere Sanderau is home to many companies: Spindler and Mercedes Benz, for example, to name just a few of the large car companies.

The Würzburg streetcar depot on Königsberger Straße was built in 1979 and is home to almost all buses and a large number of streetcars.

Above Randersackerer Straße, which connects the city center with Randersacker, is the large Edeka-Trabold market.

The middle Sanderau

Sanderau is separated from the city center by the Ringpark. This part can also be classified as the actual center of the district. Along the Main, south of the Löwenbrücke bridge, the city beach was built for the first time in 2006, which is a temporary and artificial beach. In the summer months, you can enjoy a drink or dance to a variety of music there after work.

From the city beach, meadows with playgrounds, barbecue areas and areas for sunbathing or playing table tennis extend along Ludwigkai and Theodor-Heuss-Damm. This is where many families and young people spend their time in summer.

The Sanderrasen is an outdoor sports facility that is used by numerous schools for sports lessons. The soccer and basketball pitches are very popular, where people of all ages come together in summer to play soccer or basketball. The running tracks offer ideal conditions for amateur athletes, but also for professional athletes to prepare for competitions.

Right next to the Sanderrasen, you can go swimming in the Sandermare Gesundheitsbad, an indoor swimming pool. It also offers numerous swimming courses for children and a steam bath and sauna for relaxation.

One of the highlights of Sanderau is the Adalbero Church: a Catholic parish church named after Bishop Adalbero of Würzburg, who was born around the year 1010. It is also known to many Würzburgers as the "Würzburg Cathedral" due to its size. In addition to many musical events, the lively Adalbero flea market is held regularly on the church grounds, where private individuals can sell old items or buy interesting things.

The canteen at the student union offers fresh food for students, workers and senior citizens and is a popular meeting place for lunch breaks.

Both the rear and the middle Sanderau are optimally connected to the streetcar network and you can reach all surrounding districts and the city center quickly and easily by streetcar or bus.

The upper Sanderau

Often mistakenly assigned to Frauenland due to its direct proximity, the northernmost part of Sanderau is located above the Ringpark and is only separated from Frauenland by the Mittlerer Ring.

Here, too, there are almost exclusively apartment buildings and some residential complexes. Würzburg's main cemetery, a petrol station, several grocery stores and all the stores for everyday needs are located here. There are numerous bus connections to the city center and at the Würzburg-Süd train station, half of which is assigned to Sanderau and half to Frauenland, there are regular trains to the main train station.
