The Old Town, the historic city center Of Würzburgis the most populous district of the city with around 19,000 inhabitants. Almost 35,000 students live in Würzburg and many of them live in the Old Town. Located in the center of the entire city, it is surrounded by the Ringpark. The Old Town is divided into eight further districts: Äußere Pleich, Dom, Haug, Innere Pleich, Mainviertel, Neumünster, Peter and Rennweg. In the past, these districts were considered separately, but today they only serve as a superficial overview. Neighboring districts are Grombühl on the right bank of the Main, the Frauenland and the Sanderauon the left, bordered to the south by the district of Steinbachtal and to the northwest the Zellerau.

Living in the old town

During the Second World War, 90% of Würzburg's old town was destroyed in a bombing raid in March 1945. Prior to this, Würzburg was known throughout Europe as one of the most beautiful baroque cities. Fortunately, some buildings from this period have been preserved thanks to extensive restoration work.

Würzburg's old town consists almost exclusively of apartment buildings with apartments. In between, there are a few small terraced houses, which also serve as residential and commercial buildings. In general, there are also many offices, stores and restaurants for sale or rent in the Old Town. Due to its central location and many tourists and walk-in customers, the Old Town is also ideal for opening a store. Most of the properties have a similar, unadorned architectural style, which was created in the course of reconstruction after the Second World War.

Although most apartment buildings do not have their own garden, they often have a backyard. Many of the apartments are occupied by young people, but there are also older people who have lived in the city center for decades. This mixture of young and old creates a dynamic, interesting population structure. Free parking spaces are in short supply in the city center, which is why many residents travel by bike, on foot or using the well-developed public transport system.

In summer, many people gather along the modernized Main Promenade to listen to music and spend time together. There is a popular pizzeria with a large terrace at Alter Kranen, as well as a cozy café. Sanderstraße, which leads into Sanderring, invites you to end the evening in numerous small pubs and bars. The street is very popular and is mainly inhabited by young people. The Ringpark, Würzburg's "green lung", which surrounds the old town like a belt, offers many opportunities for all age groups. Whether it's walks through Little Nice, sports facilities, playgrounds, lawns or ancient monuments and fountains, everyone will find a way to relax here.

Culture and sights

The old town has a high density of sights, many of which have a historical past. First and foremost is the Würzburg Residence and its large courtyard garden: built by Balthasar Neumann, the Residence is the masterpiece of southern German Baroque and also one of the most important palaces in Europe.

UNESCO added it to its list of World Heritage Sites in 1981 - the third building in Germany to do so. The associated courtyard garden is laid out in Baroque style, with many plants and flowers, and is tended daily. Another highlight of the city is St. Kilian's Cathedral, a Catholic church dedicated to St. Killian and located right in the center of the city. Church services, cathedral concerts and other events are regularly held here in the episcopal church of the diocese of Würzburg. The two buildings mentioned above attract numerous visitors from all over the world all year round. Local farmers sell fresh fruit and vegetables on the market square. There are also a large number of small stores with special delicacies or other rare little things.

The Würzburg Christmas market is held there every year, as well as other events such as the Spring Fair and All Saints' Fair. The popular Würzburg City Festival is a major highlight for the citizens of Würzburg every year, as it brings together young and old to enjoy time together. The same applies to the Harbour Summer at the Old Harbour, where various musicians perform in an idyllic setting. After a long day at work, or sometimes during the lunch break, many people meet on the Old Main Bridge and drink a glass of wine together. With its statues of the "bridge saints", the Old Main Bridge is also one of Würzburg's landmarks and connects the old town with the Zellerau district.

In summer, a boat trip on the Main to Veitshöchheim with a view of the Old Town and the banks of the Main is a wonderful experience.

Infrastructure

The great advantage of living in the Old Town is its central location and the short distance to most important facilities. Würzburg Town Hall, for example, which is also very popular with tourists, is located directly on the old Main Bridge. It houses the Würzburg citizens' office and the Würzburg city council meets here.

The Congress Centrum Würzburg, CCW for short, is a conference and congress center in the old town that opened in 1985. National and international conferences, meetings and events take place here. Near the Sanderring, in Ottostrasse, is the Würzburg district court, which was extended a few years ago. Directly on the Juliuspromenade is the Juliusspital. This has merged with the Missionärztliches Institut im Frauenland to form the modern Klinikum WüMitte.

In the old town, you will find everything you need for your daily needs: grocery stores, pharmacies, doctors, physiotherapists and much more. A large number of restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs, discos and cafés make the Old Town the most vibrant district in Würzburg.

Würzburg Central Station is located at the other end of the city near Grombühl: it is an important long-distance train station and connects Würzburg with the ICE rail network. There are direct train connections to Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, among others. The Würzburg bus station, which connects the city center with almost all surrounding districts and communities, is also located next to the main train station. Due to the central location of the old town, the public transport connections are designed to be flexible both by bus and streetcar. The Juliuspromenade, Sanderring and Würzburg Central Station are important hubs for this.

Development and real estate prices

A lot has happened in Würzburg city center in recent years: the train station has been renovated and many new pedestrian paths have been created. In general, there are more and more car-free zones in the city center, creating more space for pedestrians. A new pedestrian zone has been created along Eichhornstrasse, directly opposite the market square. A number of new residential projects have been developed and, in general, attempts are being made to meet the ever-increasing demand with innovative ideas.
